How a podcaster managed to confront his tech support scammer in person
Reply All // Long Distance
The story begins in January 2017 when Alex Goldman, one of the show’s hosts, got a cold call on his phone. The automated message told him that his “iCloud may be compromised” and to please call a specific number. This podcast follows Alex as he befriends the scammer and travels to India to meet him in person. It’s funny, relevant and fascinating to hear insights from the scam call centres. For example, did you know that they judge you by your name?
Bonus: Microsoft did a global survey of tech support scams in 2016, and the results are pretty interesting. You can find it here. Oh, and don’t be like Alex. Never let some stranger remotely connect to your computer.

CATEGORY_ LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU
// Unread
This podcast is a brief four-episode nonfiction piece built on a personal tragedy wrapped in a mystery that comes with a hell of a hook. In late 2019, the writer and academic Chris Stedman received the very worst type of message you could get: the final note from a friend who had just taken his own life. But the letter also contained something else. His friend had been a Britney Spears superfan, and in the message, he left a link to audio files containing conversations between him and a woman he had met on a Spears fan forum — a woman who, in many ways, sounded a lot like the pop icon herself. They had talked about this person before, marvelling at the question of her identity. Grappling with the loss, Stedman sets out to find this person, recording his journey along the way.

// How To Fail With Elizabeth Day
Journalist and author Elizabeth Day has made a career out of failure. Not literally –
she’s a brilliant and engaging host but uses failure as a lens through which to view success, not as a way of dwelling on misfortune, but to highlight what we can learn from it. She asks guests – actors, authors, athletes and politicians – to talk through some high profile moments in their lives where things just went wrong. It’s warm, reassuring and fascinating.

BONUS: FOR SCRUB FANS
// Fake Doctors, Real Friends
We all remember Scrubs, the medical sitcom that built much of its appeal around the warmth and camaraderie of the young and funny characters.
Zach Braff and Donald Faison, who played new doctors J.D. and Turk respectively, reunite here for an episode-by-episode watch through from the pilot onwards. Parts of the show may not have aged that well, but this is a generous dollop of nostalgia for fans.
